Cultural Identity - 1374 Words

It is an interesting experience for me to face who I am when so much has happen within my life. Being a proud, 49-year-old, white man has not been easy. Everyone goes through hard times. However, I grew up in Port Orchard, WA with my family and friend – all of which were white. The early parts of my life occurred in a racially homogenous culture and impacted several aspects of my identity. My maternal grandparents were from Italy and my paternal grandparents were from Germany. I do remember seeing my great grandparents. My maternal grandfather was distinctly Italian with his rich olive skin color and my maternal grandmother was very religious – requiring my brothers and me to attend Catholic Sunday mass. It is the elites who control a majority of the wealth in our society and they are not going to give up their status. I have mixed emotions on how my culture identity has shaped my worldview. I have worked hard and created my social status yet I know there is so much inequality in the United States and within the world. Poverty and race have plagued our county for hundreds of years. My degrees in Anthropology and Sociology provided me with an understanding about culture, diversity, and social status. Education provided me a new understanding about different races and cultures within the world. The foundation within our society is bias and it manufactures and shapes our thinking to reject other cultural values and norms. I am socialized to obtain wealth and think only of my needs and wants. I am bombarded with the media to hate other cultures within the world, yet consume products that destroy the environment and continue the circle of poverty within under developed war-torn countries.
